Marseille Travel Tips
Arriving in Marseille early?
Spend a couple of days at the incredible “Cité Phocéenne“
Marseille isn’t just a destination - it’s a mood. A sun-drenched, sea-kissed, art-infused experience waiting to be savored at your own pace.
Things to do in Marseille:
Le Vieux Port & Breakfast by the Water
Start your day slowly at Pétrin Couchette with a buttery croissant and café crème. Then, meander over to Le Vieux Port, the heartbeat of Marseille. Watch fishermen sell their daily catch, admire the picturesque Phare de Sainte-Marie lighthouse, and soak in the harbor's vibrant energy. If you're in the mood for adventure, consider hiring a private boat for a leisurely cruise.
Notre-Dame de la Garde & The Petit Train
Going there, you may want to skip the uphill trek and take the Petit Train to Notre-Dame de la Garde, a hilltop basilica with jaw-dropping views of Marseille and the Mediterranean. It’s a perfect spot to pause, breathe, and take in the city's beauty.
The Mucem & Seaside Strolling
The Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations (MUCEM) is a must, not just for its exhibitions but also for its striking architecture and sweeping sea views. Wander through Fort Saint-Jean, where history and coastal panoramas blend seamlessly.
Le Panier – The Artistic Soul of Marseille
Our favorite place in Marseille. A maze of pastel facades, hidden courtyards, and art studios, Le Panier is the city’s most charming district. Browse the boutiques, stop by Atelier Celadon for local craftsmanship, and soak in the artistic energy.
Château d’If – A Literary Escape
Take a short boat ride to Château d’If, the legendary island fortress that inspired The Count of Monte Cristo. With sea breezes and cinematic backdrops, it’s an experience straight out of a novel.
Sun-Kissed Lounging & Local Flavors
And of course, no visit to Marseille is complete without soaking up the sun. Lounge at a chic beach club or explore the hidden coves of Les Calanques. If you’re looking for a fashion-forward moment, stop by Pain de Sucre for a stylish swimsuit.
Cours Julien – Marseille’s Creative Hub
As the evening unfolds, Cours Julien comes alive with street art, live music, and some of the city's best cocktail bars. Opt for a rooftop spot to sip something refreshing under the twinkling Marseille sky.
A Market Adventure at Noailles
Immerse yourself in the colorful chaos of Marché de Noailles, where spices, olives, and fresh produce create a sensory feast. Pick up local treats (or a beautifully wrapped bar of Marseille soap) as a souvenir.
A Long, Leisurely Lunch by the Sea
Venture to Les Goudes, a picturesque fishing village just outside Marseille. Order a seafood platter, sip on chilled white wine, and let time stretch a little longer.

Where to stay in Marseille:
We highly recommend Grand Hotel Beauvau Marseille Vieux Port. While it is on the pricier side, it’s absolutely worth it for the location and views.
Food Tours:
Nowhere does multi-cultural food like Marseille. We highly recommend taking food tours as they are such a fun way to learn more about a city and its food culture.
Note that a food tour usually lasts 2.5-3.5 hours, so this will take up a decent part of your day. If you"‘re a foodie like us, totally worth it!
